Upcoming Workshops

Upcoming in 2017:

Arashi shibori

Arashi Shibori:
November 4 & 5 (10 am – 4 pm)
Sertoma Arts Center, Raleigh, NC
“Arashi’ means ‘storm’ in Japanese, but in shibori, it refers to the lines or stripes created on cloth that recalls strong wind and rain. There are many approaches to the technique which is achieved basically by wrapping cloth around a pole and compressing it. We will spend two days ‘playing’ with and exploring a few arashi patterns and dye the results in indigo. Supply list on Sertoma’s webpage. $15 supply fee for dye vat ingredients due to instructor at the start of workshop. Ask for the pdf information sheet at registration.
Barcode: 211121

Be sure to bring your fabric of choice, a bag lunch & drink, dish washing type gloves and small scissors. Also please dress appropriately for the dye studio. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Shibori and the Summer Breeze –
July 29 – 30th, Sat. & Sun. 10 am. – 4 pm.
The illusion of a breeze lies in the subtle beauty of noren, or Japanese split curtains. They typically appear in front of small shops or restaurants but also are used as room dividers or doorway curtains.

Using shibori manipulations in stitching, folding and binding, folding and clamping and other manipulations, participants will create patterns or motifs that speak of summer. Indigo also plays into image making and blue is a cooling hue.

Combining the two, students will create a piece that speaks to the season. All tools and fabric will be provided; however, participants may bring their own cloth choices for personal explorations. Wear or bring appropriate clothing for the dye studio, and bring small, embroidery-type scissors, dishwashing-type gloves and a bag lunch.

A $40 materials fee will be due to the instructor at start of workshop. Classes will take place in an upstairs classroom. If you are unable to use stairs, please call Sertoma at 919-996-2329 so we can make alternative arrangements.
Registration is open with Raleigh Parks and Recreation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Do you ever teach workshops in Western North Carolina—-I’m in Macon county —

    • Susan Says:

Is West Jefferson within reach for you? I gave a workshop at the Florence Thomas Art School this summer and hope to get back to the same area – at some point – probably next year.

The West Jefferson location is about four hours from my location. It sounds very interesting…..I will see what the new year brings. Thank-you
