tracing – thoughts

Nancy Erickon's Black Wolf

One of the threads that came through (for me) was a sense of communion and interaction with the earth, each artist approaching it with their own unique set of tools and sensibilities.

I visualized each on their hands and knees, scratching digging, listening, measuring, then recording, intuitively, with dots, dashes, lines and other marks and symbols, tracing, feeling their way along the curves and crevices of the earth. Perhaps they are searching for traces, picking up messages left behind, or creating them with a new, universal language (that they hope can be read).

On the other hand, I thought of them putting hands to the earth in much the same way a mother puts her hand to a fevered brow, again feeling, measuring in a sense, but also touching, caressing and comforting.
