Last week, workshops at a school in Cary had K-3 students creating their own “hachi-maki” as well as banners. Kindergarteners, grades 1 & 2 printed the fish on pieces dyed in indigo, then the level 3s added the stenciling.   After “practicing” on these pieces, they moved on to their own. It was only one morning’s activity with 3 classes.

Koinobori pattern

The next day I worked with grades 4-8. Those students designed their own Koinobori.
