Christmas Past

Kagoshima Christmas

I woke this morning to the sounds of Christmas carols on WCPE and hazily thought, “Is it Christmas? Did we skip a day?” No, we hadn’t, but in those brief waking moments,  I was recalling childhood memories of early Christmas morning carolers standing just within the front gate of our yard in Kagoshima. We (my siblings and I) were given permission go see the carolers, but we were not to enter the living room that had been closed off with glass doors (the glass being distorted so that we couldn’t see what was behind it clearly).

Later, these singers were invited into that  “forbidden room” for hot chocolate and a sweet treat, such as homemade sweet rolls that mother had baked on Christmas Eve. After the guests left, we were finally admitted to that room with the tree.
