Some members of my critique group gathered for a “play day” and to celebrate my birthday.

We brought small projects (and food!) to work on all day. I think it’s all we needed – a little thread and needle and a lot of conversation – it goes far.


We had cake on the porch under a big umbrella. The breeze was reminiscent of summers past in a place faraway. Then the wind blew up and the rain came down and we moved indoors. Maybe it improved the day. We kept stitching, sharing and telling stories.  We also ate a wonderful meal.


It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.

And some of us have been together for quite a long time. so, we didn’t celebrate just the one thing, but many. It was a delicious summer’s day.

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light.
