This is the small “exhibit” on the wall just outside my classroom in the pods. It turned out to be a random collection of what “worked” in terms of space, their use of space on the paper and then again imagery. I wanted a representation of the kinds of things they were doing as well as what I’d asked them to do.

I assigned the J1 class to produce a favorite expression, haiku or proverb in hiragana. They’d been given some samples they could copy if they wanted. I also asked for a sample of Kanji (which they haven’t done, but I wanted them to attempt it). Then, I wanted something free form which is what they really want to do, so why not?

The J2 class was assigned basically the same thing, but without doing hiragana. They were provided with a substantial collection of proverbs and haiku as well.

I always enjoy seeing what they produce. There are always surprises and I learn a lot from the experience.
