New Year’s Entertainment

Last week in class, my students looked at video clips from NHK on the New Year. They saw news clips as well as snippets from formal, traditional theater such as Bugaku, Ginei (Chinese & Japanese poetry readings) and Noh-Kyogen. At the end of all presentations we watched a bit of the all women’s Takarazuka Revue and finally the 59th Kouhaku Utagassen. All forms of entertainment and theater were fantastic displays of stage setting and costume. In Beth’s TOK (Theory of Knowledge) they compared Bugaku with Utagassen. After class some girls came up and wanted to know: who were those guys in white? Good question. A lot of these kids already know who the hottest stars are and I am amazed. Anyway, it’s a little tidbit I still need to research.
