Ito Takio/Soran Bushi

Ito Takio has long been a favorite when it comes to the Soran Bushi. Whenever I go looking for it on YouTube, it’s his usually his voice you hear. It’s strong, energetic and conveys what’s needed to bring a contemporary sound to a centuries old folksong. Friday, I happened to turn on the telly when he was performing on NHK’s Friday Variety. At the end he sang while his group dressed in long, indigo blue happi (happi coats), danced Soran Bushi.

This video was taken when he was much younger, but he stills sings it in the same spirit today. A short write up on him says, Among the first to successfully combine the folk music of Japan and the rock and roll of the United States and Europe, Takio Ito has continued to explore a cross-pollination of musical influences.”
