Over dyed with Indigo

Indigo & Shibori at the Beaufort Art Center in Beaufort, NC

Just thought I’d add this link with the detailed information again. That time is getting close and as I understand it, there are still a few openings for attendees. If you are interested, you are very welcome. We have a grand time down in that very charming town located on the coast.

fyi:  in the last day, we’ve been discussing a one-day option for those who may prefer that.  So, if you are interested in a more modified format, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  The full weekend gives more time for greater exploration.  It’s also summer…a good time for slowing down and working with slow cloth!

Indigo & Shibori Workshop in Beaufort, NC

Indigo over Black on rayon

Shibori~~~ Indigo dye workshop at the Beaufort Art Center:

Update:  I’m noticing some traffic on this page so wanted to add a  note at the top – if you are interested but only available for a day – we can be flexible along that line as well. Just contact us. We still have room!

What you need to know:
Raleigh artists Susan Oliver Fennell and Janine LeBlanc will hold their third two-day indigo dye workshop at the Beaufort Art Center, 204 Turner Street, Beaufort, NC on Saturday, July 16th from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, Sunday July 17th from noon to 5 pm.

Indigo dyeing has been practiced all over the world for hundreds of years. Its characteristic blue color can range from a pale sky blue to nearly black and is still used to dye denim jeans.

In this workshop, participants will use a traditional Japanese approach to transforming fabric using stitching, binding, capping, pole wrapping and clamping. We will use a slow and meditative approach to the design and preparation of a piece of fabric to be used for a specific project — an article of clothing, fabric for a garment, quilt or tablecloth. The fabric will first be dyed a solid color using Procion MX dye and then over dyed and discharged using indigo. Participants can either bring their own fabric or contact the workshop leaders for suggestions. No previous dyeing or sewing experience is necessary.

Susan spent her formative years in Japan and brings a deep understanding of Japanese culture. She has taught both Japanese language and indigo dyeing in Wake County schools, as well as Shibori workshops for Elementary School teachers.   Janine brings her experience from her work with Japanese textiles at the Gregg Museum of Art and Design at NCSU.

To register for the workshop, call 252-622-8416 and leave a message or e-mail art.beaufort.center@gmail.com. The workshop is limited to 10 participants with a minimum of six. Please reserve your space by registering before July 10th. Cost is $115 which includes the cost of the dyes (the fee changes with those wanting a 1 day experience).

For additional information about the workshop:
contact Janine at 919-881-8330 or jleblanc33@earthlink.net.
Photos of Susan’s work can be found at www.susanfennellstudio.com.

Since I last posted about the workshop, you might note that the date has been moved forward a week.

Aizome- Indigo dyeing in Beaufort

April 13, 2011

I’ve noticed more than just a few visits to my entries about workshops in Beaufort or Carteret Co. (same place) and just wondering what that indicates…interest?  Questions?   Readers, please do feel free to inquire.

At this point, it looks like the next available time for a workshop at the Beaufort (NC) art center is in July.  We don’t have a specific date as yet, but as soon as I know, it’ll be posted.

So at this point May is open or free for personal studio time (I also have a special dress to dye – that’s the plan).  Of  course, I’ll also be thinking and doing more specific prep for my youth class at Artspace (June).

This hands-on workshop will use a Japanese approach to resist dyeing, or shibori, to create distinctive patterns on fabric. Participants can bring their own fabric for a specific project. Silk, cotton and rayon scarves and yardage will also be available for purchase. No previous dyeing or sewing experience is necessary.

Beaufort, NC Indigo Workshop

July 29, 2010

August is nearly here and it’s a month crammed with events and activity.  Beginning next week, I teach rising middle school students the art of indigo dyeing and shibori at Artspace (downtown Raleigh).  It will be a full week of dyeing, learning about itajime, binding, wrapping and a lot of nui (stitching).

Following that is a second week at Artspace working with rising 3rd – 5th graders doing a workshop titled Matsuri! 祭り!(festivals!).  We will be looking at crafts (textile) related to that theme as summer is one of the best times to explore that topic (can’t imagine why!).

After a week’s break in Tampa with family, I’ll be returning home to teach aizome shibori with Janine LeBlanc in Beaufort, NC.  I’ve posted more about that below:

Dates:  August 28th & 29th

Place:  Beaufort Art Center

Instructors:  Janine LeBlanc and Susan Fennell

For further details scroll down to p. 8 in the Arts Alive Newsletter for southeast NC.
